If you're thinking this is redundant with the big Spain book, yes there's a lot of the same content, but this one is SO much easier to carry around - sometimes you want to be a bit more surreptitious with your guide book - and means you don't have to rip up the other book. Also the color photographs are beautiful. We used this book nearly from cover to cover in Barcelona last month, making heavy use of the walking tours. Well worth it. I need one of these for a few other cities.
I have bought several of Rick's travel guides and I will admit that they are a very accurate glance at each city. However, this last trip guide left me shocked and very disappointed "with Rick." His restaurant choices were not very tasty or clean, and he left out one of the most exciting and beautiful places in Barcelona: Tibidabo mountain/amusement park! (He described it in one sentence! :( )Tibidabo had one of the most unbelievable views of the city, Monserrat and the surrounding areas --- you can literally see for miles. It was isolated and gorgeous. Be sure you take the elevator to the top of the church steeple for an even BETTER view!So yes, get this book if you want some insight to Barcelona and see all the cheap places and TONS OF GAUDI museums that Rick makes you go to....but also try someone else's guides to get more out of Barcelona. :)
In the opinion of this frequent traveler, Rick Steves's guides are the ONLY ones you need if you're going anywhere in Europe! In the past, I've bought two or three guidebooks for the same country before I felt like I had all of the information I needed. Once I found the Rick Steves books, I have never bought another vesion of any travel guide again. The Rick Steves guides are so thorough, that the only way you could get better, more complete guidance would be to have Rick or one of his tour guides along with you.Each guide takes you through the country city by city, including what to do before you leave home, what to pack, where to stay, where to eat, and what to see. He'll tell you what sights will need advance booking or reservations. There are walking guides for cities, as well as detailed walking tours for museums, churches, and other major sights. For the history lovers, there are beautifully written sections to educate you about what you're seeing, which makes your experience measurably more meaningful. The information is so detailed that Rick tells you things like, "When exiting the front of the train station, turn to your left and walk 20 yards to the bus stop. Take bus #11 to go directly to the castle." It doesn't get any easier to plan your sightseeing than that! And of course, there are simplified city maps to help you navigate once you get there, usually marked with his suggested walking tour route.Other helpful sections include tips about money, shopping, climate, and transportation. But one of my favorite parts of Rick's books is that he tells you how to really see a place by becoming what he calls a "temporary local." In other words, don't miss the real heart of the country by seeing only the well known tourist hot spots. He tells you how the locals live and how you can have that experience, too.Finally, each book includes a list of survival phrases and words to help you communicate while you're there. As Rick says, and I can confirm, the locals will very much appreciate your attempt to use their language instead of just assuming that they speak English. Don't worry about your pronunciation - just try it!There is so much valuable information in the Rick Steves guides that I'm sure I'm leaving something out. In my opinion, they have no equal!Make sure to get the most recent edition and you will be glad you bought this guide!
We traveled to Barcelona for nine nights in September of 2017. Terrifically helpful, with ideas about where to stay, what to see, and where to eat. It's more oriented to the well-heeled traveler than to someone who is on a tight budget, especially when it comes to eating places. Fortunately, there are lots of local restaurants not on the list that were inexpensive with pretty good food. We couldn't always afford the top restaurants described. Basically went through hotels.com to find a hotel, since everything Rick Steves recommended was full up two months ahead of time. Expect any restaurant Rick recommends to be very crowded, since so many people pay attention to his recommendations. Not very many obscure places, and the minute Mr. Steves would recommend a place it would no longer be obscure and uncrowded. Great and helpful book, though. Hints throughout about how to avoid lines and crowds which were very useful.
Rick has done an excellent job, as usual, on providing information that gives you the opportunity to make the most of your trip. Reading the book in advance allowed me to better plan and make the best use of my time. There is only one piece of information that I found to be inaccurate--the information on leasing vehicles. The book suggests that it is more economical to lease a vehicle if you are keeping it more than a minimum time period. However, when I called the company listed in the book, they told me that the cars were delivered to Spain from France, and, therefore, there would be a $500 delivery fee which makes it much more expensive than the rental option.Another problem is that the electronic version is a little more difficult to find information if what you are looking for is not close to the title listed in the table of contents. The maps are useful, but if they are printed in landscape format, it is impossible to turn the device to view the map correctly, that is, it always rotates sideways which makes it very difficult to read. I have been back from the trip for 4 days, and now that seems to be working properly. Perhaps an upgrade has corrected that issue. However, it still exists in the edition on Portugal.Finally, I had great difficulty downloading the Kindle Edition. I had to call Amazon 4 times to get it done. Hopefully, they have this corrected by now.
For such a small guide book, this pocket manual has been a lifesaver. It is detailed enough to help me plan an entire itinerary. The guided walking tours seem fool-proof. Since it is so small, I can fit this book into my small cross-body purse for reference when I'm actually walking around the city. Highly, highly recommend any of his books and travel accessories.
