Having fled England, accused of murder and treason, Richard Fitzwarren and half-brother Jack gather a group of mercenaries to try to market a hundreds of flintlock muskets and pistols, crossbows and spare parts, numerous enough to equip a small army, all hidden and unaccounted for in a warehouse in England. Richard plans to find a buyer, demonstrate the effectiveness of the weapons, and then have them shipped to the buyer. However, not all the mercenaries he recruits, though he knows most of them, some very well, not all are working for the same goal to serve the ends of their young Master Richard. Colorful descriptions and events, action and intrigue please and surprise the reader.
I have just binge read the first three books of the series and plan to begin book four today. I am addicted. I love following the changing fortunes of the brothers and their companion Lisbet and the excitement of their world. Burnell creates a complex plot with forces that interact to create uncertainty about the outcome. All of this against the backdrop of Elizabeth's uncertain and constrained life as the heir to Mary's rule as queen. Exciting, interesting and a lot of fun.
I didn't realize that this is the third book in the series. It makes more sense to start from the front of a series not the middle. The story line and characters and even the time setting remind me a lot of the vastly superior Lymond Chronicles by Dorthy Dunnett, a six book series as I recall.I want to complain about the book but I can not. I found myself engaged, wanting to see what happens next. When it stopped suddenly, I was mad. I wanted more, which is a good sign.
Now the characters have become more real. This book in the series was a lot more gripping. Have even purchased the 4th book in the series.
Lots of characters and much information to digest. Historically accurate, but editing could have been more accurate. Several times break should have been brake, and other editing errors that stopped the reading. However, the story and adventure continue from the Queen’s Traitor, and builds throughout the story. And our two heroes are proving ever more interesting.
To be fair, the misadventures are caused entirely by a trusted ally who was actually a scheming dirtbag (who was an excellent two faced liar and all round villain).The only complaint I have was the lack of background. The author seemed to assume the reader already knew the characters for some reason and left the reader to sort them out.A good entertaining read.
To me the story amid the history is intriguing and timeless. However , as far as this particular book is concerned the ending leads to the next novel. Not really stand alone! Nevertheless you will enjoy it if you like Elizabethan history!
