About the Author
Peter Shinkle worked for 19 years as a reporter at various news organizations, including most recently the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He covered the federal court system, and also wrote investigative stories on subjects ranging from improper disposal of radioactive waste to contamination spread by a lead mining company. Shinkle is the great-nephew of Robert Cutler. It was during a family vacation in 2006 that his mother, Judith Cutler Shinkle, and his aunt told him that their "Uncle Bobby" was gay. That sparked a 12-year endeavor to explore the story of the man who was one of President Eisenhower's closest advisors.

The subtitle of this book, "The Secret Lives of Robert Cutler," suggested it was a biography. And indeed, the first two chapters followed Cutler's early life. But the book soon veered off into US foreign policy. This was not unreasonable, since Cutler was President Eisenhower's National Security Advisor. But instead of focusing on Cutler’s involvement, the policies themselves, and their causes and effects, were treated in great detail. This proved to be far more about American policy in the 1950's than I wanted to read.Much of the biographical material revolved around Cutler's love for a man, Skip Koons, who was some thirty years younger. Koons loved Cutler in return, and was indeed gay, but never found Cutler physically attractive. For Cutler, this was a cause of great frustration and disappointment. Still Cutler never stopped loving Koons, and always enjoyed his company, though never his bed. Indeed, Cutler confessed in his 70's that he had sex with a man only once in his life.In short, this was a book too full of policy, and of personal disappointment, for me to really enjoy.
This is a must read for anyone wanting to learn more about the Cold War Era and how a man closest to the President managed to keep his homosexuality secret. As a gay man myself who was just a small child during the Eisenhower administration, now looking back at those years when being gay was something to be kept hidden from everyone, I found this book fascinating.Bobby Cutler was Eisenhower's right hand man, at the very forefront of history. Yet he was a tortured soul seeking human love and companionship. Cutler's diaries, quoted extensively, paint a portrait of a brilliant man who managed to help the government's efforts to rid itself of "sexual deviates" while Cutler himself sought the company of men.This is a complex, well researched story.
In this author's desire to produce a well documented, vivid defense of his relative (Mr. Cutler), he has published a very slow moving, ponderous, biography. The day to day plodding pace of events (from cradle to grave), using cumbersome language (long sentences with no grasp of paragraphing) just overwhelmed me as a reader. The author's goal is laudable: bring forward a man's honorable life of service to his country. But this goal is lost in the book itself. Mr. Cutler's courage, intelligence, and patriotism were honorably put forward in defense of America and were in no way diminished by the man's homosexuality. This simple theme has been obscured by the book itself. On the positive side.....the books allows reader's to more fully understand the early post WWII era in American life and politics as seen by a very astute source. This book is heavy work, but a must read for all students of this era.
I enjoyed this book as it focused on many different aspects of Ikes administration. The end is where the forbidden love letters are revealed. Great pictures at the end too!
Depressing but well written story. It is at its best revealing behind the scenes stories of the Eisenhower admin.
This is a fascinating story, and easy to follow. I'm so glad I chose this historical nonfiction memoir by the subject's great nephew.

Robert Cutler is much less well known than such immediate successors as the President's national security advisor as McGeorge Bundy, Walt Rostow, and Henry Kissinger, but this book makes clear he ably managed a cohesive and deliberate foreign policy decisionmaking process that served our country far better than theirs did. Seeking to be an "honest broker" of competing ideas rather than a personal advocate, he insisted upon a highly disciplined policymaking machine that helped Eisenhower avoid many of the pitfalls his successors' impulsiveness and arrogance affirmatively enabled. On that count alone, this book deserves far more attention and public discussion than it has yet received. It is an important and well-researched addition to national security decision-making studies.It is also the painful and emotionally riveting story of a semi-closeted gay man at the height of the Joe McCarthy era when Cutler's sexuality was considered not just devient, but subversive. While President Eisenhower was willing to make political accommodations to that attitude, even having Cutler draft an executive order implementing it in federal departments, Ike never acceded to the fevers of the day in his personal domain. His own sexual attitudes, dating back -- oddly enough -- to his military experience, were surprisingly libertarian; he clearly knew Cutler and others in Cutler's circle on his staff were gay, and harbored, protected, and befriended them nonetheless. This book should help cement Eisenhower's ever rising standing as not only one of our most astute foreign policy presidents, but -- despite a chilly ambition that has been often noted in other books about him -- as an open-minded and essentially compassionate human being as well.For a book so well-documented, there are a few glaring errors. Adlai Stevenson was governor of Illinois when he first ran against Ike in 1952, but he was never a senator (although his namesake son became one). And Richard Nixon's so-called "secret fund," a major issue in that 1952 campaign, did not pay for his dog Checkers. Checkers was sent to Nixon's family unsolicited by a supporter in Texas unknown to him. Nixon, insisting he would not send the dog back, merely cleverly used that innocent gift in his gripping televised defense of his conduct to assure his audience of both his integrity and common touch.But these are only quibbles. At a time when rash ignorance and narrow-minded insularity flow daily out of the White House, this book is a vivid and much needed reminder that we can do better.
