I'm not a finance person but it seems that everywhere I turn whether watching the news or watching the markets, I get bombarded by terms and phrases I don't really understand. The Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms helps me grasp the concepts being described by pundits and analysts. The cover says there are over 5000 terms. Other reviewers say there are more information online which is no doubt true, but for what I need it is all pretty much right here. To me, it is easier to flip through a book to a specific page than it is to do a search, review my options, then scroll through adds and fluff to find what I'm looking for.The book says it is in its eight edition so that tells me it has been around for a long time and has been a useful resource for all of that timespan. The language is simple to understand. THere are no political spins or economic theories being presented. It is what it says it is, a dictionary of terms relating to finance and investing. The book won't make you rich or get you out of debt, but it will describe what type of wealth you have or the terms for your debt.I purchased this book to help me understand terms and concepts and it appears that this book will serve that purpose well. If you are looking for a similar resource, then I strongly recommend this book.
The ebook version is horrible because you can't jump to different pages or search for words.. you have to scroll through all pages :(
Not at all what I was looking for e.g. for novice, does not have terms, explanations, diversity and in detail/long financial world & explanations expected.
Expect this little work to be exactly what it is titled, "Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms". It does not contain a story, or financial advice, or commonly used terms. It is a financial dictionary. Its binding is "professional softcover" and has very thin pages- required due to 600+ pages. I notice some reviewers' felt it was not worth the money. Where else can you find a professional dictionary of specialized terms for under $12 ? I found the book so useful, I purchased Barron's Investment Guide, which includes the dictionary. I recommend both of these books (...)If your looking for an enthralling read, the Finance Dictionary is not that. If you're looking for an inexpensive, professional little reference book, full of pertinent terms and explanations, this one will definitely earn its keep.
Barron's is known (with good reason) as the go-to reference for this type of product. This book is accurate, and contains pretty much every financial term you could ever want (and many more). The size is ok, but it is a little small for me. Even though I like the idea of the "pocket size", it looses much of its portability when it is so thick. I think I would rather the margins be slightly larger and the book be thinner, but that is splitting hairs.It is true that every definition in this book can be found somewhere online, but if you are looking for a physical book containing everything you could want or need finance related, look no further.
Can't stop reading it ! Helps refresh and advance my vocabulary.. I'm a college student with a major in International Finance & Economics and this helps with my class work ..
I have worked in debt and equity finance for over 17 years and can say this is a useful tool to have in your belt. While it isn't completely comprehensive, there is a solid foundation of terms relating to real estate, stocks, law, and other major areas upon which to build. Just as no tool in my garage handles every job, this book lacks some terms that could have been included. However, for the size, cost, and utility of this little book, it provides a great desktop reference to have upon your shelf or desk to utilize at a moment's notice. Of course there's a lot of information on the web. However, since Barron's is one of the most respected names in finance, I know the information in the book is both accurate and presented from the perspective of a true professional.
