When I ordered this book there had not been any user comments yet. It arrived today and the comments by Mr. White are exactly spot on.I think that the fact that 1/3rd of the book is not printed should be mentioned prominently in the book description.If you turn pages starting at the beginning of the book you can see that chapters 24 through 33 are marked (Online). Online also? No. Just online. I went to the index looking for Online to find the URL. Nothing listed. Not until you get to inside the back cover is there any mention of where you might go to find the missing chapters.For the real deal, go to the que.com site. You have to type in 13 digits in the URL while the back cover tries to slam shut, but keep trying. You have to set up an account and in my case the first requested password was rejected because it supposedly was similar to my email address. It was not remotely similar. Using a well-known swear phrase worked just fine. From there you can download the exercises examples and the entire ebook version in PDF format.For me, this is enough. I don't want to read on the Safari site, which you only have 45 days without paying. Signing up there was a waste of time for me.
It's a very informative book. The main fault is not with the author but the actual program itself. The book clearly explains Access 2010 in detail and will become my "go to" reference manual on the subject. The only problem is the chapters that are not included in the book but instead must be downloaded. It isn't always convenient to be working on a database and have to switch to the pdf file to see what the instructions/explanation is. The sample databases are invaluable for someone just learning the program or someone like me that had been fairly proficient in Access XP. Eventually, I see myself reading this cover to cover.
I found this to be a great reference for the Access user that is not completely novice. If you are just starting out I recommend "The Missing Manual" books, but if you are looking to expand your knowledge, the IN DEPTH books are very helpful and worth the purchase!
I bought to "catch up" on M.S.Access Macro and VB application coding from a perspective of having done some extensive application development in M.S.Access pre-2003. I found the topic presentation very readable and informative and at a good level of presentation (albeit a bit amateurish in some regards vis-a-vis application development), All-in-all, this book met my expectations and was useful in it's discussion of macro usage in Access 2010.
I have used this book a few dozen times already looking up reasons for errors and how to fix them. The help menu is fine but when you need a better explaination nothing beats a book.
I love Microsoft Access 2010 In Depth for its depth and richness. However, I hate the book because it's not complete! It contains just two third of the content, the rest has to be read online. This is definitly not a good idea and I will never again buy a book with this combination. Either it's a book, or an e-book, it can't be both at the same time.
After reading the other reviews concerning the missing portion of this book I took a chance and bought it. After running into problems registering at the publisher's (Que) site to download the missing content I used their 'contact us' form. Their response was an e-mail explaining they can't guarantee a personal response but they provided other e-mail addresses I can use to get support.Some of the poorest customer service I've ever seen!
If you have a little experience with Access this book will reveal a lot of inside user tips and tricks. Well written and informative.
