Review
**STARRED REVIEW** "An elegant, insightful portrait of an artist worth knowing." (Kirkus Reviews)**STARRED REVIEW** "Take note of this biography of an extraordinary painter" (School Library Connection)"High-definition, full-page reproductions of her artwork, as well as supporting historical information about the era in which Bonheur lived, make this an accessible portrait of the artist." (School Library Journal)"Macdonald pares Rosa’s biography down to accessible chapters, highlighting such interest-sparking details as the artist’s need for documented permission to dress as a man to attend horse fairs and the mid-century portrait dolls modeled after her that became something of a rage. Plentiful, generously scaled reproductions of Bonheur’s work and that of several contemporaries will lure in browsers, and discussion of the Impressionist movement that drove Realism from the field adds important context." (The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books)"A historically rich chronicle of artist Rosa Bonheur’s life." (Publishers Weekly)

Rosa's Animals offers a rare history of a woman painter from the 1800s, during a time when women were not often documented or given a chance to succeed. Rosa Bonheur's detailed and beautiful paintings of animals deserve to be well known, and this book tells the story of how Rosa came to be a artist, and about her love of animals. This stunning book (with a knock out cover of a lion's head) shines a light on Rosa Bonheur's painterly talent. With gorgeous reproductions of her work alongside a "can't put it down" narrative, we learn about the life of this unusual and gifted artist. Her work hangs in some of the most renowned museums of the world, but why is her name not commonplace? Maybe it will be now! Maryann MacDonald has her own gift of finding something fascinating and under appreciated, and bringing it to life. I loved this book.
ROSA BONHEUR'S ANIMALS is a beautiful book. It is informative, enlivening, and well written. The illustrations are mostly either Bonheur's original work or photographs related to the time in which she lived. The text pulls the reader in. And when a book draws one to a local gallery or museum it is an added bonus; there are 18 different museums or galleries around the United States where one can get a glimpse of Bonheur's original work. After I finished the book I ran over to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and stood in front of THE HORSE FAIR (pg. 34-35)...I will now look for Rosa Bonehur in my annual car travels across the country!
Three generations of a family were visiting: grandmother, daughter, and granddaughter. I bought this as a present for them. It turned out to be the perfect gift! At night they sat together and read parts of the book to each other and had wonderful discussions about Rosa's life. I mentioned this to a local librarian who is going to order this for their collection. It is appropriate for all ages and I highly recommend this book.
This gorgeous book about Realist French painter Rosa Bonheur is beautifully written, and includes high quality (Abrams!) reproductions of many of her famous animal paintings--including The Horse Fair. Rosa had an unconventional life. She kept a menagerie of animals as models (horses, dogs, rabbits, goats, deer, birds, lions and more) and became friends with Buffalo Bill Cody. Macdonald tells the story of this petite nineteenth century artist who broke down the barriers that kept women from being accepted as artists.
I bought Rosa’s Animals for my nieces ages 8 & 12 - they both loved it. As an adult I was moved by the story & the beautiful art throughout. I bought a copy for myself & keep in on the coffee table.
