Review

"A stunning, unforgettable read, Bipolar Faith grabs you with the first exquisitely composed paragraphs and won't let you go until the final page is turned. Even then, its impact lingers. To say this is a book about mental health severely limits its scope, which includes arresting reflections on race, womanhood, death, love, sex, community, and joy. A master storyteller, Coleman seamlessly knits together the personal and universal, the particular and the communal. Hers is one of the clearest and most compelling voices in Christian literature today. Let those with ears hear."—Rachel Held Evans, Author of Searching for Sunday and A Year of Biblical Womanhood"Monica Coleman is a courageous and brilliant theologian whose wisdom and rigor helps sustain many of us. This unique and pioneering book opens a new spiritual zone for our serious attention!"—Cornel West, Author of Democracy Matters: Winning the Fight Against Imperialism and Race Matter"I'm very excited about Rev. Dr. Monica Coleman's new book, Bipolar Faith. The church—and broader society—must do a much better job engaging issues of mental health, and Dr. Coleman's powerful story sets us on the right path. This will be a helpful resources for pastors and congregants across the country." --Joshua DuBois, Author of The President's Devotional: The Readings that Inspired President Obama"In Bipolar Faith, Dr. Coleman offers a brilliantly written narrative which provides a bird's-eye view of her early years marked by family strife, tragedy and loss juxtaposed with the joys of childhood summers spent immersed in a segregated black community in Washington, DC. She ushers us gently into her world in which, over time, through Ivy League baccalaureate study and pursuit of ministerial professionalism and spiritual scholarship, she comes to terms with a family history of mental health challenges and substance use disorder, her own traumatic experiences and a diagnosis of mental illness which finally explains her episodic changes in mood, outlook and activity level. The reader will admire Dr. Coleman's strong faith through it all, her existential questioning and the fact that she has emerged whole from introspective exploration, loving herself as is." --Annelle Primm, Senior Psychiatrist Advisor for Urban Behavioral Associates and former Deputy Medical Director of the American Psychiatric Associatio"In her memoir, Bipolar Faith, Reverend Dr. Monica Coleman courageously shares the story of her own personal and private life struggles with God, death, loneliness, love, rape and a family history of mental illness. Once a taboo topic, Dr. Coleman's revelation of the need for a middle place to balance the public demands of life and the private pain and isolation of depression helps the church begin the conversation about relevant ministries to meet the needs of our congregants who often find themselves in the dark place of mental illness. Our spiritual journey takes us through light and darkness. This book may help an individual or a congregation to honestly pull back the cover of secrecy to develop resources for hurting people and families. Bipolar Faith shines a light in those seemingly empty periods of darkness." --Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, 117th Elected Bishop, African Methodist Episcopal Church; and Author of Not Without A Struggle, Journey to the Well, Strength in the Struggle and Swapping Housewives

"I was so busy trying to stay alive that I didn't know that I had died." -Dr. Monica A. ColemanThe above quote is one of my 'ah-ha moments' while reading #BipolarFaith: A Black Woman's Journey with Depression and Faith by Dr. Monica A. Coleman.Coleman's accessible memoir style cracks the silence which surrounds the all too familiar Black church ethos regarding mental health. Coleman gives language to the once considered indescribable and invites the reader into the intimacy of her thoughts. You will laugh, cry and at times want to walk away from the text and say, "Ooo chi'le. I can't"---- but as with all well written books, it will call you back and you will journey to the end.The journey to mental & emotional wellness, regardless of the incident(s) that beset us, is long. I consider this book a necessary read towards this end.

Rev. Dr. Monica A. Coleman courageously offers her life as an open book. From moments of deep and dark despair to discoveries of faith and fortitude, Bipolar Faith chronicles her journey of becoming. Coleman is a masterful storyteller who has written a definite page-turner that is hard to put down and yet this memoir is more than a good book. More significantly, Bipolar Faith is a prophetic witness inside the shame and secrecy often associated with mental illness and sexual assault. Coleman dares to unveil the trauma of rape, the crisis of living with a depressive condition, the hurt of isolation, the risks of faith, and the challenges of balancing this all while pursuing vocational goals, navigating life, supporting family and pursuing her own healing and wholeness. Subsequently, in reading Bipolar Faith the reader not only grows in awareness but also hopefully in activism to build communities of support for those who suffer. In the end, Coleman puts a face and voice to issues that are often obscured and ignored. This makes Bipolar Faith a leading liberative work of advocacy and justice in the 21st century that uniquely addresses the confluence of mental illness and faith in the black community based on firsthand accounts of lived realities. I strongly recommend Bipolar Faith as recommended reading for the classroom, church and community.

Full Disclosure: At the time of writing this review, I was a student of Dr. Coleman’s at Claremont School of Theology.Dr. Coleman writes from a place of authentic lived experience. She chronicles her highs and lows with her Christian faith, how it weaved in and out of her experience of Bipolar II lows, and where it intersected with her African-American heritage. Although it is an easy read, it does not recount an easy life. She battles her own demons and shares those struggles honestly and openly. She writes where her understanding of God did not make sense, and how she began to build constructive theologies with process thought. If you are trying to grapple with sexual abuse or a depressive condition, this is a must-read!

Very happy I decided to purchase this book. I found myself highlighting a lot in the beginning and end of the book. How she describes repairing her relationship with God and how she now sees their relationship really was powerful for me. I am a 30 year old Black woman who is also a Christian. Thank you Monica Coleman for your raw honesty and exposing your life.

People of color simply do not discuss mental health enough! It’s just as important as what the eyes can see. Monica outdid herself with this gem. Brutally honest, heartbreaking, healing and so much more. I am encouraged to continue the good fight and so much more 😊

As a fellow theologian, I can relate to Dr. Coleman's struggle with depression, life's challenges and the spiritual walk with God. I was glad to find this book and confirm that I'm not alone. Her candor and honesty really put it out there. I highly recommend this for anyone struggling with depression.

A healing, lovely account of what it's like to be in the black church and also struggle with what many of us see as demons, but are not. If anything, read this book and know you're not alone, it's ok to get help and you don't have to be super woman or super holy all the time. Great to read this kind of memoir and from an author who's already taken her faith and struggle and brought us great, healing literature.

Bipolar Faith was a great book. Theologians are the true rock stars in our society. Looking for the God factor in every experience and knowing how to assist others with their trials is in no way a easy task. Monica has opened her life for others to understand a journey that doesn't have to be a death sentence. This work is inspiring at best. There are many people hurting because of being misunderstood. Monica does a good job of translating her crises as a opportunity for hope and life beyond the empty tomb.
