Page 94: "Lead, the insecticide methoxychlor, and ethanol, the active ingredient in alcohol, cause effects in developing children that would be unpredictable from studies on adult animals or humans."Upon noticing that gem, the book lost all credibility. Does the author really know so little about chemistry as to not know that ethanol is beverage alcohol?
I am a retired agronomist who has taught many classes about pesticide use. I also have a fair chemistry background and a long interest in the subject covered by this book. What I lack is a legal background which would have made this book a better read for me. The author makes a very valid point about the fact that we are not protected from many dangerous and unknown chemicals being pumped into our lives by industry. Not the pesticides, they are reasonably well regulated but, the thousands of other chemicals that industry can legally put into our lives without such testing. As the Tea Party folks talk these days about doing away with the EPA this book does an excellent job of pointing out why the U.S. of A. needs a better funded EPA and FDA; or a program such as the European Union's REACH to better protect the citizens from toxicants. We certainly are not going to be protected by industry.I think all political representatives at state and the national level should read this book and take action. I do not see this happening until a lot of children suddenly are shown to be poisoned, killed or incapacitated by some 'harmless' chemical big industry has injected into our lives without adequate testing.
Great book
The book is saying what has needed saying for a long time...the chemicals in our lives are many and dangerous. However, Cranor repeats himself many times and the book is long as a result. I wanted to know more about our exposure on a daily basis and what I can do to sway our leaders to do more to protect us from these killer chemicals. The book is an awaking for sure, it is just not written for the average American.

It puts into perspective the conflicts between toxic and hazardous waste production and disposal, basic human health and far out-of-date environmental laws.
A good read. Well documented. Very depressing disclosure of the suble corruption in our economic world. How will there be profit when the public is dead. Sickness represents profit. death does not.
