I thought the book would ask the students to explain their solution more. Yet, the book is basically the Spectrum Book for Math, Grade 8. Save you money and buy the other book.
I used these consumables to catch my niece up in math over the summer. Great texts.

The exercises in this workbook are based on Common Core. By critical thinking, I expect logic problems and exercises that expand on basic foundations. These are more like "other (longer) ways to get to the same answer". A lot if it seems like a waste of time because instead of the effort resulting in greater understanding or applicable skills, it is spent doing busy work that shows the student another way to do what they've already learned. It is typical Common Core in that it takes something simple and complicates it, confuses the student and wastes time that could be spent learning something they'll apply in their future.
To me this book is the most direct yet it's so intelligible! It's simply the Common Core curriculum for grade 8 math - exactly what is on the Common Core website for this grade & topic. The concepts listed on that site are modeled in this book, making the book more accessible for those engaged in the discipline. The book uses black and red font, and also some shades of orange to help with formatting and diagrams.There is a mid-term exam and a final exam, and an answer key for the whole book. The learning content is 101 pages and the answer key is in pages 102-126. I'm not seeing any typos; this was clearly well-edited.Early in the book the number system is covered including what is required in Common Core: all about rational numbers and irrational numbers. The kids are working with scientific notation, square roots and exponential properties, including power of a quotient and negative power.The Expressions & Equations section of Common Core for this group covers linearity using several types of analysis including graphs and solving for linear systems in the real world. The book uses graphs, written language and all the modalities required in Common Core.The Functions section requires deeper analysis and interpretation, including of nonlinear functions and also constructing functions in the real world. This goes to the essence of Common Core regarding the topic, that students demonstrate real world applications of their mathematics knowledge.The Geometry section works with theorems about angles and distance, theory with hands on problem solving. That's Common Core love-it-or-hate-it, expecting 8th graders to next be ready for trigonometry.The Statistics and Probability section uses among other tools, scatter plots and also two-way tables with problems that analyze math within TV shows "Dancing Stars" and "Zombie Nation."I think it's an outstanding book, allowing whoever tutors the student to assess what the student knows and is able to do with regard to subject and grade. I've long had a theory that math textbooks are written by mathematicians for mathematicians. I do a lot of coaching of adults in math to support them in passing various tests and to pass entry level college courses and the majority of textbooks that come across my desk are incomprehensible to the student who didn't do well in high school math. I've found that using a "recipe" method of teaching math rather than trying to get students to understand the principles and theory behind algebra and geometry works much better for my students, who are just trying to fulfill basic requirements in order to get on with what they really want to do. This is a rather long-winded introduction to my review of this book, but bear with me.Although the book claims to be designed for eighth-graders, the contents are perfectly geared to my adult students. I used it yesterday, as a matter of fact. My adult student is struggling with a college math requirement, and miracle of miracles, the light bulbs started going on within the first couple of pages. This book is more of a "recipe" book, as in, "when you see this, you do this." Exactly what I'm after, and so much clearer for my adult students.There's not enough practice in some lessons, and a couple of lessons confused even me, but that's not a deal breaker. The contents are a great survey of first year algebra, and on the whole, clarify a lot of the concepts that are problematic for my adults. It's broken down into manageable sections, and it's very easy to ascertain whether or not a student is ready to move on.
